Tesla Motors Announces Plan to Build Self-Driving Car
Electric car manufacturer, Tesla Motors is working to develop a self-driving car within 3 years.
According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the autonomous car would allow the driver to hand 90 percent of the control of the car over to the vehicle’s computer system.
The self-driving car would be developed in-house using Tesla’s own technology, Musk explained in comments confirmed by a Tesla spokesperson.
The company has recently posted a job listing on its website for an “Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Controls Engineer”, who will be responsible for helping “Tesla’s effort to pioneer fully automated driving.”
Tesla plan sounds extremely ambitious especially when the analysts say it will take 10 to 15 years before self-driving cars become a reality.
For example Germany’s Daimler AG, who already offers technology that allows for partly automated driving such as traffic jam assistance in its S-Class Mercedes and Japan’s Nissan, have both claimed they hope to start selling self-driving cars by the end of the decade.
Not only the technical obstacles but also the legal and safety issues need to be conquered before driverless cars are allowed on the road.
