Monsanto’s GMO Corn Causes Cancer Tumors in Rats

A new French GMO study has concluded that rats fed on Monsanto’s genetically modified corn or exposed to its top-selling weedkiller suffered tumors and multiple organ damage.

In a study published in journal “Food and Chemical Toxicology”, the researchers led by Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen in France have found that rats fed on a diet NK603 Roundup tolerant GM maize or given water containing Roundup, at levels permitted in drinking water and GM crops in the United States, died earlier than those on a standard diet.

The scientists have also made the claim that the animals on the genetically modified (GM) diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as severe liver and kidney damage.

“This research shows an extraordinary number of tumours developing earlier and more aggressively – particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts,” said Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist and gene expert at Kings College, London, and member of CRIIGEN, the independent scientific council which supported the research.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) dominate major crops in the United States after Monsanto introduced a soybean genetically adapted to tolerate Roundup in 1996.
Today around 85% of maize grown in the US is GM, while 70% of processed foods contain GM ingredients without GM labelling. In Europe GM maize is not consumed directly by humans but is widely used in animal feed without the requirement for GM labelling.

While supporters of GM crops say previous the 90-day feeding trials have overwhelmingly pointed to their safety, critics argue there is still not enough data about the long-term effects since the crops have only been around for just over 15 years.

In France, where opposition to GMOs has led to a ban on growing such crops, the government said it had asked its health and safety agency to assess the study and had also sent it to the European Union’s food safety agency (EFSA).
