Ford’s First Solar-Powered Car
Ford has unveiled plans for solar-powered car with sun-tracking technology.
The Ford C-Max Solar Energi Concept is equipped with a solar panel system on the roof which tracks the position of the sun.
The company said it can draw power equal to a four-hour battery charge.
The Ford C-Max Solar Energi Concept is said to be able to travel for 21 miles once fully charged.
It estimates that the solar C-Max could reduce the annual greenhouse gas emissions a standard vehicle would produce by four metric tons.
“When you actually park this vehicle under a purpose designed concentrator… we’re able to get that car to be powered 100% by renewable energy”, Mike Tinskey, Ford’s lead executive for the car, told BBC Radio 5 live’s Drive.
According to Ford, the concept car will be on display at CES in Las Vegas before testing begins to see if production is feasible.
Besides the C-Max Solar Energi Concept, the company also has a plug-in version of the Ford Fusion mid-size sedan, the Fusion Energi.
Ford claimed it sold more plug-in vehicles in October and November 2013 than both Toyota Motor and Tesla Motors. The company also stated it is now No. 2 behind only Toyota in the sale of conventional hybrid cars that do not have a plug-in option.
