Cubano-dubstep by Mala
‘Mala in Cuba’ is one of this month’s most intriguing new releases.
In May 2011 London dubstep pioneer Mala (Digital Mystikz) traveled to Havana, Cuba with Gilles Peterson to team up with local musicians as part of the ongoing Havana Cultura project. The results are documented on his album ‘Mala in Cuba’ – released on Brownswood Recordings, on 10th September 2012.
Brownswood boss Gilles Peterson has described the album as the most important record he’s had a hand in since Roni Size’s 1997 landmark ‘New Forms’. “This is the record that reevaluates and realigns the dubstep movement within sound system culture” – he explained.
‘Mala in Cuba’ is a mixture of organic Cuban instrumentation and early dubstep. It is very much Mala’s interpretation of Cuban music.
“When I listen to the record now, I understand more about my time in Cuba than when I was deep in it. The experience of visiting these countries and meeting the people, that’s worth more than anything. It doesn’t get much realer than this”- he described.
Here you can listen to the Introduction that best describes Mala in Cuba – in spirit, if not style.
